My Grandparents Donut Shop Logo

My grandparents opened up a donut shop in San Francisco in the 1940s called the Dunk and Dine. After my Grandma almost died having my uncle, they closed up shop.

Since there doesn’t seem to be any memorabilia or ephemera from the shop, I decided I’d make some for my mom for her birthday.

My first stab was a simple donut pattern with the name of the shop that I was going to have printed on stuff.

I liked it but wanted it to be a bit more personal, so I lost the pattern and added their names and sketched a classy diner bowl with what could be a six-year-old’s sketch of the Golden Gate.

Because I can’t keep it simple I made a signature dish for them called “English Donut Chowder” since my grandparents’ last name was English.

I had it printed on mugs for my mom to use but she just put them on a precious things shelf.

I also tried to see if baking donuts was in my blood.

It is not.
